Simple Greek study basics

Here is a visual guide to simple Bible study the RAW way.
You have some Bible software. And you have a copy of the RAW Greek Dictionary. So... what's next?

Find a word

First step is to set up your Bible software.
* This guide uses theWord Bible software. Do you use different software? Please comment below with your how-to guide! *
  • In theWord, open the KJV (King James) Bible
  • Go to a New Testament location. *The picture shows Mark 1:1*
  • Press the S key (just the letter S, nothing fancy.)
You should now see green text between the English Bible text. All the green text is "G" followed by a number.
* If you COULD see the green text before you hit the S key, and now you CAN'T, press the S key. *

*This guide uses the King James Version. Any version with Strong's Numbers will work.*

The green text is Strong's Numbers. "G" stands for Greek, the original language of the New Testament. (The Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew, so those numbers start with "H".)
James Strong did a very useful thing. He went through every word in the Greek Dictionary of the NT, and he gave each word a number. In alphabetical order. He did the same with the Hebrew Dictionary of the OT.
1 Strong's Number = 1 Greek word

Use the Dictionary

In theWord, choose a word to look up. Then, open the RAW Greek Dictionary

*First we'll look up "Jesus". The Strong's Number is G2424*
  • In the RAW Greek Dictionary: click the Edit menu, then Find. Or, on the keyboard press Ctrl + F (hold Ctrl, tap F).
  • The Find box appears at the top. Type G2424.

Here's the result. Notice the --- above and below the entry. It is the only word in its group.
Also notice the definition: noun: Joshua, Jesus. H3091 . The H number means this is a Hebrew word, transferred to Greek. The original Hebrew name is Joshua. Jesus is listed next because that's the name we recognize.

* Next we'll look up "Christ". The Strong's Number is G5547. *
  • In the RAW Greek Dictionary: click the Edit menu, then Find. Or, on the keyboard press Ctrl + F (hold Ctrl, tap F).
  • The Find box appears at the top. Type G5547.
Here is the complete entry, with --- above and --- below.
This entry shows us:
"Christ" means "the anointed". "Anoint" means to pour oil on.
"Messiah", a Hebrew word (H4899) also means "the anointed".

Find words in the Bible

Where does "the anointed" appear in the New Testament? Here's how to find it.
  • In theWord
  • Click in the Search box

Here are the results. There's a lot of them, because "Christ" appears frequently in the NT!
What if you want to find the Hebrew for "the anointed"?
  • In theWord:
